GCC Womens Soccer Ranked #1 in the nation

The GCC Women's Soccer team sits at the #1 ranking in the nation with an exciting regional game victory over Herkimer CCC on Wednesday at GCC. The score was tied 2 - 2 after regulation and two 10 minute ovetrime periods, then GCC prevailed 4 - 2 on penalty kicks.The game was played in very windy conditions, and the intensity level of both teams was evident from the start of the game.

The GCC Women's Soccer team sits at the #1 ranking in the nation with an exciting regional game victory over Herkimer CCC on Wednesday night at GCC. The score was tied 2 - 2 after regulation and two 10 minute ovetrime periods, then GCC prevailed 4 - 2 on penalty kicks.

The game was played in very windy conditions, and the intensity level of both teams was evident from the start of the game.

In regulation time, Brittany Luckey (Leroy, NY) put the lady cougars up 1-0 with just 5 minutes into the game off a pass from Jessie Jaszko (Batavia, NY). 3 minutes later Herkimer CCC scored an unassisted goal off a corner kick from Ashleigh Tracy.

Jaszko (Batavia,NY) had her second assist of the night when she crossed a ball in front of the net and Cady Hume (Batavia, NY) finished the ball back post.  In the second half, AshleighTracy of HCCC scored a controversial goal for Herkimer to make game tied 2-2. Many in the energized crowd thought that it was an offsides play, but the officials didn't see it that way.

Although GCC dominated play throughout the game, the score at the end of regulation was tied 2 - 2

Both teams had several good scoring chances in overtime, but after two 10 minute overtime periods the score remain tied.

In the 5 player per team penalty kick shootout, GCC kicked first, and they took advantage by burying their first shot into the net. Herkimer's first shooter hit the post and missed, and from there GCC went on to win the penalty kick shootout 4 - 2 for a tense, hard fought victory.

Adele Zeh (Nunda,NY) played in net for GCC, registering 8 saves, and had one diving gem in the shootout to preserve the victory.

The GCC Women’s Soccer Team (16-1-2)advances to the NJCAA Region III Finals

GCC's next game is Saturday October 30th, 2010 at Tompkins-Cortland CC, NJCAA Region III Finals against Mohawk Valley CC.
