The community is invited to a special screening of the film “Including Samuel” on Thursday, November 4th from 6-8 pm in T102 at Genesee Community College. The College’s Teacher Education Transfer Program is hosting the screening as part of their ongoing professional development series. “This event highlights the importance of recognizing the inherent value of every individual and celebrating their unique contributions,” Christine Belongia, GCC’s Teacher Education program coordinator and assistant professor.
While the film documents the experiences of a select number of families, in reality, Including Samuel speaks for the efforts of students, families, teachers, providers, administrators, community members and policy makers everywhere to include people with disabilities in all aspects of life. Filmmaker and Samuel’s father, Dan Habb’s hope is “that the film will inspire the public, especially anyone connected to education, to work toward inclusion in a more informed and innovative way.”
Following the screening, guests will have an opportunity to participate in a panel discussion and question and answer session featuring parents, teachers, agency representatives and administrators. The film’s screening begins at 6:00 pm and will be preceded by a reception including an agency and teacher fair at 5 pm in T102. Guests are invited to visit with providers and teachers prior to the screening to discuss the issue of inclusion as well as ways in which students with disabilities can be included more fully.
According to Jodi Harvey, Genesee Instructor of Developmental Disabilities, “Our goal is to provide an opportunity to reflect on whether our schools offer authentically inclusive experiences.” Genesee’s Teacher Education Transfer Program offers approximately ten professional development opportunities annually.
“Events such as this are not only important for our pre-service teachers and teaching assistants here at Genesee, but for all interested members of our community. We invite everyone to participate in this inspiring and thought provoking event,” Professor Belongia said.
