Although Genesee County is not in the middle of a bustling metropolitan city there are still many residents dealing with homelessness and poverty. In Genesee County, 12.3% of the population or 7,030 residents are living below the poverty line.
Students at Genesee Community College will be ‘Camping Out for a Cause’ as students spend the night in the Student Union at the Batavia Campus to raise awareness for those suffering from homelessness and hunger. Sponsored by the Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Honor Society, the event is scheduled for Friday October 29 to Saturday, October 30, 2010. The all-night event will kick-off at 8:00pm and is sponsored by the College’s Campus Activities Board and the Student Government Association.
The Camping Out for a Cause event will begin with students gathering in the Student Union and bringing donations of non-perishable food items that will be donated to the GCC food pantry along with new or gently used winter clothing, which will be donated to Community Action of Genesee and Orleans Counties. Phi Theta Kappa will give a presentation on local homelessness and hunger issues in the GLOW region in room T102. After the presentation, students will return to the Student Union where they will have the chance to watch the movie “The Pursuit of Happyness” starring Will Smith, and throughout the evening student clubs and organizations will be performing in the Student Union.
Participants in Camping Out for a Cause will bring their own sleeping bags and spend the night on Genesee’s Batavia Campus’s east lawn in cardboard boxes or tents, depending on weather conditions. At 6:00am coffee will be served and a continental breakfast in the Student Union café will begin at 8:00am for all of the participants.
“Although we live in a rural region, we still have homeless people in our communities and because of our location, there are not the same resources available to the homeless as there are in more urban areas,” Lori Mould president of PTK and the College’s student representative on the Board of Trustees said. “We not only hope to make this a campus wide event, but also one that reaches out into the community for their help and support.”
Pre-registration is required by Tuesday, October 26, 2010 and can be made in the Student Activities office at the Batavia Campus. Registration fee is $1 per person plus a canned good. Students under the age of 18 will need to have a parent or guardian’s permission to participate in the event.
Community members who would like to donate funds, cardboard boxes, non-perishable foods and/or winter clothing for Camping Out for a Cause should contact Genesee’s Student Activities Office at 585-343-0055 x6261.
