Four Genesee Community College Bound Local Youths Honored with L.I.F.E. Awards

Albion, NY- Four local youths, all headed for Genesee Community College in the fall, were awarded Liberty Partnership L.I.F.E (Liberty Increases Future Experiences) Program awards. Created in 1988 by the New York State Department of Education, the Liberty Partnership Program awards grants to post secondary institutions for the purpose of providing services – such as tutoring, academic and personal counseling, mentoring and community projects – to students identified as “at risk” of dropping out of school.

Genesee Community College operates the Liberty Partnership Program out of the Albion Campus Center located at 456 West Avenue.

The four LIFE award recipients are:

Nicholas Fearby is a graduating senior from the class of 2010 at Medina High School. He has been an active participant in the LIFE Program since 10th grade and has been enrolled in the WIA Program since 11th grade. Nick has been working at McDonald’s for almost two years and was recently promoted to crew chief. Nick plans on taking his two free summer classes at Genesee Community College through Genesee Promise Plus and is looking forward to working as a counselor-in-training for the LIFE Summer Program– Dirty Jobs! He is interested in getting a degree in Business Management and has been accepted into Genesee Community College for the fall of 2010.

Shonte Lockwood is a graduating senior from the class of 2010 at the Charles D’Amico High School, in Albion, NY. She has been an active participant in the LIFE Program since 2005 and has been attending WIA activities since the age of 14. Shonte is currently pursuing a career in the airline industry through Jet Blue and has been taking classes in Human Services at Genesee Community College. She is planning on taking American Sign Language during summer session at Genesee, through Genesee Promise Plus, as well as additional classes in Human Services. Her aspiration is to work with people and become a flight attendant.

James Mault is a graduating senior from Brockport High School. James entered the LIFE program when he was attending the Brockport Middle School, in 7th grade. He has participated in high school sports, lettering in football, wrestling, and in lacrosse. He has also maintained his academic record, with honor roll designation on a regular basis. James has travelled the country, participating in wrestling tournaments all over the Eastern seaboard. He is an Eagle Scout, and active in the Boy Scouts of America. James will be attending Genesee Community College in the fall and he will be majoring in Liberal Arts. He plans on transferring to SUNY Brockport

Brittany Perry is a graduating senior from Brockport High School. A consistent honor roll recipient, she has been attending the culinary education program at Monroe 2 BOCES for the past two years. Brittany has been in the LIFE program since the 7th grade at the Brockport Middle School. She has attended Skills USA competitions in culinary arts all over New York State and the Northeast and has received accolades for her efforts. Her aspiration is to operate her own restaurant. She plans on attending Genesee Community College for two years, and then transferring to the Johnson and Wales to complete her studies in Hospitality and Restaurant Management.
