Medina, New York — The Medina Campus Center of Genesee Community College is pleased to announce the spring 2010 Student and Instructor of the Semester. Each semester, one student and one instructor are awarded the honor for their academic or teaching performance. This is the second year the Medina Campus Center has been awarding this honor. Instructor of the Semester is selected through a nomination process whereby students nominate their instructors for superior teaching performance. Kari Heidemann of Barker, NY has been selected as the Instructor of the Semester. The Student of the Semester is selected through a similar process with faculty members nominating a student for their academic achievements. Katherine Joseph of Medina, NY has been selected as the Student of the Semester.
Kari teaches Introduction to Human Services as well as the Field Experience in Human Services classes at the Medina Campus Center. Kari’s first-hand professional experience serving the community stretches across 12 years from being a youth counselor with the New Directions Diagnostic Center in Lockport, NY, to being an MA-level psychologist and case manager for the Orleans County Mental Health department in Albion, NY. Kari has a masters degree in Psychology from SUNY Brockport and a bachelor’s in Psychology and Sociology from Niagara University. Student comments included, “she is great at explaining things and will take the time to clarify until students understand,” “Kari is a wonderful teacher and just a great person,” “I wish I could have her for more classes,” and “she definitely makes us think clearly about choices that will affect our lives now and in the future.”
Katherine is a part-time student at the Medina Campus Center. Katherine decided to attend college to finish her education and says her long term goal is “to teach and inspire children about learning new things.” The major influences in Katherine’s life are God, her mother-in-law, and her mother. When asked what her advice for future college students is, Katherine said “take the amount of classes that will not overwhelm them. Balance is the key even if it requires going to school for a longer period of time. It is okay to go part time.” Instructor comments included, “Katherine is hard-working, creative, timely, and enjoys helping the students around her” and “Katherine stayed beyond class time to help a student. She did this out of the kindness of her nature.”
The Instructor of the Semester and Student of the Semester award certificates are framed and displayed in the hallway in their respective Campus Center, along with photos of the previous instructor and student award winners from semesters past.
