The Anthony T. Zambito Gymnasium was filled to capacity today with more than 270 students marching across the stage to become the largest graduation class in Genesee Community College’s history. In total, the College anticipates approximately 800 graduates will make up the Class of 2010.
In her first commencement address as SUNY Chancellor, Dr. Nancy L. Zimpher gave an inspiring keynote speech to Genesee’s packed crowd of graduates, family members, College faculty and trustees. She first highlighted the transformative power of SUNY and particularly the important role of community colleges. She recognized Genesee’s President, Dr. Stuart Steiner with his 35 years of presidential service at Genesee making him among the longest reigning college presidents in the nation. She then highlighted the six strategic goals for SUNY to become an economic engine to transform the economy of New York State. And finally, she quoted Thomas L. Friedman’s bestselling book “The World is Flat” encouraging graduates to “flourish in the flat world, be strategic optimists…imagine things can be better and act on those imaginations, everyday.”
Dr. Zimpher began serving as SUNY Chancellor in June 2009. In her role as the chief executive officer of SUNY she provides overall leadership and direction to the 64-campus system. She currently is launching one of the most expansive strategic plans in higher education with specific steps for SUNY to lead the way for the economic revival of New York State.
