Arcade, New York—The second annual Teacher Feature Race at Holland NASCAR Motorsports Complex is set for Saturday, June 12, 2010 and Genesee Community College’s Arcade Campus Center is all revved up and ready to race! The Teacher Feature Race is an annual race featuring local educators, including this year Arcade’s adjunct faculty members Becky Reynolds and Michael Weston, racing to take the top honor as fastest teacher. The Teacher Feature event will take place from 3:30pm until 5:00pm with local NASCAR short track racing starting at 7:15pm.
Arcade Campus Center associate dean, Dr. Deborah DiNoto hopes to uphold Genesee’s winning title from last year’s race. “Whatever the outcome is, this is a great opportunity for GCC to interact with our local community members,” DiNoto said. “This event illustrates how well a community college connects with its constituents. Many of our students and faculty members spend considerable time at NASCAR in Holland each summer, and we look forward to sharing some of the action outside a classroom. In this case, learning really is a two-way street.”
Alongside the Teacher Feature event will be Genesee’s Arcade Campus Center “pit crew” including Dr. DiNoto, as well as the staff, faculty, friends, students and alumni. The GCC crew will be ‘race ready’ offering a few door prizes and wealth of academic information on a wide range of careers. Many of Genesee Community College’s 60 academic degrees and certificate programs can be completed at the Arcade Campus Center. The staff will be ready to share information about the easy, online application process, as well as introduce many financial aid and scholarship options.
Of specific interest will be the Genesee Promise Plus Scholarship Program targeted for 2010 high school and GED graduates who can to take two college courses this summer without paying tuition. Under the Genesee Promise Plus Scholarship program, every 2010 high school graduate will receive a scholarship covering the cost of tuition for one or two college courses during the five week (July 6 – August 7th) summer session if they graduated from high schools in Genesee, Livingston, Orleans, or Wyoming Counties (the College’s GLOW service area). The scholarship pays all tuition and fees and the student is only responsible for purchasing required textbooks. These earned credits can be used to get a head start on college at GCC, or they can be transferred to most other colleges and universities. The deadline for the Genesee Promise Plus Scholarship Program is June 18, 2010.
All new students of any age who register for summer classes before the race will receive one free admission ticket to the Teacher Feature Race. These complimentary admission tickets for the Teacher Feature Race at Holland NASCAR Motorsports Complex are available through the Arcade Campus Center by stopping by the Center at 25 Edward Street in Arcade.
With good weather, many of the Genesee Community College’s motorcycle enthusiasts –students, faculty and staff-- are going to use the Saturday event for a great riding destination. The scenic countryside around Genesee’s seven locations in Albion, Arcade, Batavia, Dansville, Lima, Medina and Warsaw offers an ideal riding range with Holland Motorsport Complex a perfect meeting spot.
