Genesee's Lima Campus Center Promotes Tourism Education

In the fall 2010 semester, Genesee Community College’s Lima Campus Center will offer an opportunity for students to explore a dynamic and exciting career, while embracing the ambiance of the Finger Lakes. The Lima campus is situated at the western door of the region, an area rich in tourism opportunities and related employment possibilities.

The Lima Campus Center will offer Tourism and Hospitality 101 that will meet Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 12:40-2:00pm. Students will develop expertise in lodging and food service, attractions, recreational activities, meetings and events and overall business management. The course will originate in Lima and will be broadcast live to GCC’s Albion Campus Center via video-link.

Lisa Burns, Livingston County Tourism Director, highly recommends tourism and hospitality as a practical and enjoyable career path. "Tourism is a $53 billion industry in New York State and as viable a career choice as I can think of. Everyone goes on vacation, even short overnight and one day vacations. There's not a day that goes by that I don't feel incredibly fortunate for working in the tourism industry. It's social, interactive and like being on vacation at work, especially here in Livingston County."

“Finger Lakes Tourism’s slogan, ‘Splendid from any direction’ is certainly fitting! The region offers museums and art galleries; historic sites; outdoor recreational opportunities; restaurants; lodging that ranges from grand hotels to cozy B&B’s; waterways; and festivals every weekend during the summer months. The quality and hospitality of our wineries are unsurpassed,” said Campus Center associate dean Monica Mattioli. “And, all of these add up to potential job opportunities area residents. So, it only makes sense for GCC Lima Campus Center to provide our students with educational resources to start successful careers in the tourism industry.”

Registration for Tourism and Hospitality 101 is now underway and classes begin on August 24, 2010. Classes will meet Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 12:40pm to 2:00pm. To register call the Lima Campus Center at 585-582-1226 or visit www.genesee.edu. The Lima Campus Center is located at 7285 Gale Road, Lima.
