The Cougars baseball team is heading into their spring season after a stellar fall showing. The team finished the fall winning the New York State Athletic Championship as they had an overall record of 11-2 and added the teams second fall championship in the last four years. The team also had many individuals make the Western New York All-Conference Team. First team included pitcher Greg Rapp (LHP, Cambridge Canada), catcher Eitan Maoz (Ottawa Canada), infielders Mike Hackett (Pavilion, NY), John Polonious (Curacao N.A.) and Ed Kohout (Clarence, NY). Making second team for Genesee was Shayne Herold (LeRoy, NY) while Jacob Featherstone (Ajax Canada) was named honorable mention.
The spring team will consist of 22 players, including 15 international students from Canada, Netherlands Antilles and Germany. The team will look its core group of returning players to lead the squad this spring. Ed Kohout (Clarence, NY) and Shayne Herald (LeRoy, NY) return as two of the teams dominate players at the plate as well as on the mound. Kohout was 4-1 on the mound for the cougars last season hitting .395 with 12 RBI’s. Teammate Herald also had time on the mound with a 3-1 record and a batting average of .270 with 11 RBI’s. Zach Leitten (Alexander, NY) will also join the pitching staff for the cougars after having a 5-3 record his freshman year. Key offensive returners will be Mike Hackett (Pavilion, NY), .400 batting average and 25 RBI’s, Mitch Roy (St. Thomas, ONT) .341 batting average and 11 RBI’s, and Kevin Daniels (Southwold, ONT), .367 batting average.
The team has also added some key transfers and freshmen to their line-up. The transfers that are expected to make an immediate impact are catcher Eitan Maoz (Marshalltown College) and pitcher Kevin Hughes (Erie CC). Shortstop John Polonious (Curacao N.A.), and pitchers Greg Rapp (Cambridge Canada) and Ron Klienback (Batavia, NY) are the freshmen that will be instrumental in the team’s success.
“We are looking forward to another good season as we have some of the most talented athletes I have ever coached. They have worked very hard in the off season and we are hoping that will contribute to positive results” says Genesee’s winningest baseball Coach Skip Sherman. Genesee will open its home contest against Lakeland CC on April 8th at Dwyer Stadium.
