After a fantastic 2009 season, the Lady Cougars Softball team is looking forward to another successful year. The team finished 5th in the region last season while accomplishing many feats along the way, including beating the national champions in regular season play and having a NFCA All-American for the first time in many years.

The team will look to its returning players, Kelly Glover, Taylor Maurer and Brandi Froman to lead the team on the diamond this spring. Glover and Maurer will fill the role as team captains and will be two of the most versatile players on the roster. Glover returns a big bat to the line-up, hitting 391 last year, as Maurer will bring leadership and consistency to the team. Maurer led Genesee in a number of offensive and defensive categories in her freshman season. Brandi Froman returns to the lady cougars after being named a NFCA All-American. Froman had a phenomenal freshman season, batting 523 with 3 home runs and 37 RBI’s.

The team is also depending on the play of some outstanding transfers and freshman to fill some key roles in the line-up. Freshman Carly Shaw (Kendall, NY) and transfer Stephanie Smolsky (Toronto, ONT) will get the job done on the mound for the cougars. Freshmen Chelsea McBee (Glenville, NY), Gabby Spink (Warsaw, NY) and Kristine Shimo (Clarence, NY) will give the team depth and quickness in the infield and outfield.

Coach Schuth is very excited for the upcoming spring, “This team has the most depth we have ever had, as many players can play multiple positions. The team has talent in all aspects of the game and we have hopes to be in the top four of the region once again this year!” The team starts their season, as they travel south, on March 12th to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina to play in the Snowbird Classic.
