Two of Genesee Community College’s public speaking classes have been invited to attend a global dinner entitled East Meets West. This event will involve networking, tasting global foods, integrating cultures and exhibiting how communication can guide and assist individuals to their professional goals. There are approximately 50 students that will attend including 20 international students from Asia, Africa, South America, Sri Lanka and Canada.
Jeff Newland, a 1987 graduate of GCC will be the keynote speaker. His talk is entitled Passion + Integrity + Influence = Personal Leadership. Jeff is director of the Lifespan Boomer Mentor Project and president of Rochester Mentors. Mr. Newland attributes GCC as a positive turning point in his life that assisted him in his decisions about his professional goals.
From 6:00 to 6:30 PM the students will be required to network with individuals that they do not know attending at the dinner. Students will have business cards for this event to give to individuals they network with. In addition, the American students at the College will act as hosts and international students will act as ambassadors from their country to recognize the importance of diversity skills. Students will have an opportunity to taste foods from different cultures and spend time with international students to allow them to interact with others in a way that respects and values diversity.
