Swimming & Diving Begins Regional Competition

The Swimming and Diving teams took to the water at Monroe Community College today to start the Region III/Northeast District Championships. GCC will be competing with host Monroe, Erie CC, Herkimer CCC, Alfred State College, Jamestown CC, and SUNY Delhi for the title of Region III Champion.

The Swimming and Diving teams took to the water at Monroe Community College today to start the Region III/Northeast District Championships. GCC will be competing with host Monroe, Erie CC, Herkimer CCC, Alfred State College, Jamestown CC, and SUNY Delhi for the title of Region III Champion. Additionally, the Region III schools will be competing with Borough of Manhattan CC, Fashion Institute of Technology, Suffolk CCC, and Queensborough CC for the Northeast District title.

The competition started with the 200 yard freestyle relay, in which freshman Makayla Bidell, teamed up with sophomores Katelin Adamczak, Stephanie Mott, and Claire Vanderberg to take fourth place with a time of 1:54.22. The men’s relay consisting of freshmen Eric Kowalik, Justin Perry, Josh Kelkenberg, and sophomore Doug Nagowski took seventh with a time of 1:46.11.

GCC had a trio of women place in the 500 yd. free with freshman Leslie Flannery taking second (5:40.81), Adamczak fourth (6:04.71), and Bidell tenth (6:33.09). On the men’s side Kowalik took fifth with a time of 5:34.02. Other individual highlights included Vanderberg taking third in the women’s 200 yd. individual medley at 2:29.91, Mott’s third place finish in the women’s 50 yd. free (28.15) and freshman Adam Seweryniak taking seventh in the men’s 50 yd. free (23.84).

The night concluded with the 400 yd. medley relays; for the women Flannery, Adamczak, Bidell, and Vanderberg teamed up to take third with a time of 4:50.39, the men’s relay consisting of Seweryniak, Perry, Kowalik, and sophomore Dustin Shepard took fourth with a time of 4:20.18.
