Women Finish 1st; Men Finish 4th at Herkimer Invite

The Men’s and Women’s Swimming & Diving teams took part in the Herkimer County CC January Invitational this past Saturday. The women took first place overall with 248, followed in second place by SUNYIT (230), Herkimer (208), Erie CC (126), and Jamestown CC (60). The men took fourth place overall with 243 points; taking top honors for the men was SUNYIT (364), followed by Herkimer (309), Erie (258), GCC (243), and Jamestown (98).
One highlight of the meet came during freshman Leslie Flannery’s (Newark, NY) first place performance in the 1,650 yards freestyle (20:03.40), in which Leslie broke the school record for the 1,000 yard freestyle. Her time of 12:04.32 eclipsed the previous mark of 12:05.71; which was set by her sister Jody (class of ‘02). In addition to this performance Leslie took first place in the 500 yard freestyle with a winning time of 5:52.90. In addition Leslie helped her teammates Claire Vanderberg, Katelin Adamczak, and Stephanie Mott, to a first place finish in the 200 yard medley relay with a time of 2:15.43.
Sophomore Stephanie Mott (Oakfield, NY) followed this with a first place finish in the 200 freestyle (2:19.58). Fellow sophomore Katelin Adamczak (Dunkirk, NY) had a first place finish in the 200 IM (2:41.49) and a pair of third place finishes in the 100 butterfly (1:29.96) and the 100 breaststroke (1:19.77). Taking first in the 100 breaststroke was sophomore Claire Vandenberg (Batavia, NY) with a winning time of 1:18.01; Claire also took second place in the 100 freestyle (1:00.08) and a third place finish in the 50 free (27.59) to round out the day.
On the men’s side two first place performances were garnered by freshman Adam Seweryniak (Batavia, NY) in the 200 freestyle (2:00.51) and the 100 freestyle (55.09) where sophomore Doug Nagowski (Alden, NY) took second with a time of 56.73. Freshman Eric Kowalik (Akron, NY) took first place in the 1,650 freestyle (20:03.59) and second place in the 500 freestyle (5:43.63). Eric and Doug teamed up with freshmen Josh Kelkenberg (Oakfield, NY) and Justin Perry (Batavia, NY) for third place in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:50.60.
The Swimming & Diving teams return to action this Wednesday for a dual meet against Alfred State, home at 6pm.
