Genesee Community College will receive $536,271 for safety upgrades under a highly competitive federal grant awarded under the U.S. Department of Justice’s Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program, President Stuart Steiner announced to the Board of Trustees Monday evening. The grant will enable the College to install keyless access systems on many doors, an emergency paging system, and additional digital safety cameras and emergency “blue light” telephones on the Batavia Campus. U.S. Rep. Chris Lee telephoned Dr. Steiner last Friday to inform him of the grant.
The project will be completed by June 2011. The College already has the necessary technological infrastructure in place for the safety improvements, as well as the bandwidth necessary for the new safety devices.
Genesee Community College is already a safe environment, Dr. Steiner noted. The safety improvements will give public safety staff more tools for monitoring activity at the College, and use technology to ensure that faculty, staff, students, and visitors feel safe at the College.
