Albion and Medina, New York — Genesee Community College’s Albion and Medina Campus Centers are pleased to announce their Students and Instructors of the Semester for fall 2009. Each semester, one student and one instructor are awarded the honor for their academic or teaching performance. This is the 15th year the Albion Campus Center has been awarding Student and Instructor of the month.
The following are the fall 2009 Students and Instructors of the Semester at the Albion Campus Center:
Kelly Blackburn of Middleport, NY has been selected as the Student of the Semester at the Albion Campus Center. Kelly is a full-time student majoring in the teacher education program. She plans to transfer to SUNY Brockport to earn her teacher certification and eventually work with special needs students. As a college student at Genesee, Kelly loves learning, making new friends, and observing teaching styles. She believes her strengths as a student are reading and self-motivation. Kelly’s advice to fellow students is, “You will get out of your college experience only what you put in – take advantage of it!”
Nicole Yim of Wheatfield, NY has been selected as the Instructor of the Semester at the Albion Campus Center. Nicole teaches Principles of Business, Management Principles, Professional Sales, and Principles of Marketing at Albion. She earned her Bachelor and Master of Business Administration degrees at Medaille College. One of the students who nominated Nicole commented, “Not only do you learn from the book and homework assignments, you learn from her experiences as a business owner.” Nicole reports that her “classes feel like we’re a big family. We all care about helping each other succeed.”
The following are the fall 2009 Students and Instructors of the Semester at the Medina Campus Center:
Carol Button of Lyndonville, NY has been selected as the Student of the Semester at the Medina Campus Center. Carol, being a non-traditional student, has shown superior strength not only in her classes but also in life. After going through a difficult time, she persevered with solid academic performance and a very positive attitude. Carol is admired by not only other students, but by faculty and staff as well. As one teacher put it, “Carol continues to display an outstanding attitude and determination to complete her education while holding herself to high standards of achievement and work ethic.”
Tim Tomczak of Elba, NY has been selected as the Instructor of the Semester at the Medina Campus Center. Tim has been teaching psychology at Genesee for over two decades, and has been teaching General Psychology in Medina for three years. He creates a dynamic classroom environment rich with discussions and technology, and his students cherish his ability to help them understand the material, but also to laugh along the way. As one student put it, Tim’s class is, “…like a great ship, with a great instructor at the helm.”
Student of the Semester is chosen through a nomination form by an instructor which includes a narrative as to why the student deserves the award. The forms are collected by the Campus Center staff and, in the case of more than one nomination, each of the five staff members (Campus Center dean, secretary and three technical associates) each cast one vote to select the award winner. The winner receives a Student of the Semester Award Certificate which includes their photograph, their choice of a Genesee sweatshirt or T-shirt, a Genesee coffee mug, tote bag and pen.
The process for the Instructor of the Semester Award is the same, except that the instructors are nominated by their students. The award winner receives an Instructor of the Semester Award Certificate and the same gift package that the students receive. Award winners are presented their award and congratulated by the Campus Center deans and staff, and whenever possible, instructors receive their award in front of their class.
The Instructor of the Semester and Student of the Semester award certificates are framed and displayed in the hallway in their respective Campus Center, along with photos of the previous instructor and student award winners from semesters past.
