Genesee Community College H1N1 Flu Clinic Gives Students Hands-On Experience

On Thursday, November 19, students in Genesee Community College’s Nursing and Respiratory Care programs received hands-on experience helping to administer the H1N1 and seasonal flu vaccines at a College clinic at Genesee. Supervised by the Genesee County Health Department, faculty, staff and students lined up in the Forum at the Batavia Campus to receive the free vaccines. Approximately 62 students and faculty helped to administer an efficiently managed and successful clinic .

The College has hosted closed flu clinics for faculty and students in the past, however this was the first clinic that faculty and students have had an active role in distributing and managing the vaccination process. Approximately 278 doses of H1N1 vaccination and approximately 122 seasonal vaccines were administered.

Genesee students and faculty in Nursing and Respiratory Care are also assisting the Genesee County Health Department in other clinics at Genesee County school districts throughout November and December. To date, they have also participated in service learning opportunities at flu clinics at Pembroke Central Schools and at Batavia City Schools.

“If there is a silver lining to the H1N1 pandemic, involving students in the process of managing an efficient vaccination clinic is it,” Ron Jacobs, director of Genesee’s Respiratory Care program said. “Our students got real-life, practical experience coordinating and administering the vaccines, and they walked away with added knowledge and an appreciation for the careers they are entering.”

A College-wide H1N1 Planning Committee has been educating the college community about flu prevention and flu safety for the last three months through posters, table tents, e-mail reminders, and educational presentations. The College also has mounted hand sanitizers across the campus and campus center, and college nurses created over 70 flu kits for distribution as “care packages” for students who become ill.
