Genesee Community College's Arcade Campus Center Celebrates 15th Anniversary

It was fifteen years ago that Genesee Community College opened its doors to Wyoming County and surrounding areas, with its new campus center in Arcade. The Arcade Campus Center will celebrate 15 years of student education and support on December 4, 2009. A celebratory Open House will take place from 3:00PM to 7:00PM at the center located at 25 Edward Street, Arcade.

The center opened in September of 1994 with four sections of classes, three staff members and five classrooms. Today the Arcade Campus Center offers over 60 sections of classes, has five staff members and seven classrooms with two computer labs. The student lounge has a high definition television and the entire center is wireless internet equipped, both of which were not present in 1994.

The anniversary celebration will include free refreshments, music, an art show and more. The celebration will begin with the dedication of the Memory Garden that was created in the spring of 2009. The faculty and staff wanted a way to recognize everyone who attended classes there, taught there or was a friend of the college. There was also a need to create more outdoor student space. The “bedrock” and centerpiece of the garden is a rock that was brought down from the Batavia Campus. Mounted to the rock is a metal sculpture that was designed by Arcade student, Kate Stevens, after the Campus Center community collectively agreed her design reflected the shared sentiment everyone hoped to convey with the Memory garden.

“As we celebrate 15 years here, we want to thank the community and our students for their support,” Dr. Deborah DiNoto, Associate Dean of the Arcade Campus Center said. “This event is a way to say thanks for being there with us thus far. We want to continue to grow and serve the area as we begin our next 15 years here.”

The 15th Anniversary Open House is free and open to the public. Throughout the evening there will be music, food and classroom demonstrations. The Arcade Campus Center is located at 25 Edward Street Arcade. For further information please contact Lee Wekenmann, Arcade Campus Center Secretary at 585-492-5265.
