Genesee Volleyball finishes second at the District Tournament

The GCC Volleyball team fell to Monroe College of the Bronx in five games at the District Tournament to end their season; scores were 25-22, 22-25, 19-25, 26-24, 17-15. The Lady Cougars came out of the losers' bracket and would have had to defeat Monroe twice to advance to the National Championships.

The GCC Volleyball team fell to Monroe College of the Bronx in five games at the District Tournament to end their season; scores were 25-22, 22-25, 19-25, 26-24, 17-15. The Lady Cougars came out of the losers’ bracket and would have had to defeat Monroe twice to advance to the National Championships.

In Genesee’s first match Saturday morning they lost to the Community College of Rhode Island in five games by the scores of 25-19, 24-26, 22-25, 25-12, 15-12. With the loss to CCRI they would move into the losers’ bracket and face Delaware Tech, defeating them in four games by the scores of 25-20, 22-25, 25-12, 25-13. Delaware Tech had lost to Monroe in their first match of the tournament in three games.

Genesee would face the Community College of Rhode Island again on Sunday with the winner of the match going on to face Monroe in the finals; CCRI had lost to Monroe in three games in their second match. The Lady Cougars dropped the first two games of the match but stormed back to defeat CCRI in five games by the scores of 22-25, 23-25, 25-19, 25-23, 15-13.

The Lady Cougars were without outside hitter Brandy Calvert (Attica, NY) due to medical reasons and were forced to make some lineup changes heading into the District Tournament. Liza Cheseborough (Fountain Valley, CA) moved from setter to outside hitter leading the team with 16 aces, 42 kills and 66 assists. Kate Thurber (Lyndonville, NY) contributed 72 assists at setter while middle hitters Dawn Dodd (Daleville, IN) had 41 kills and Kayla Palmer (Oneida, NY) had 38 kills. Melissa Feldmann (Attica, NY) stepped in at the libero position and had 26 digs respectively.

The Lady Cougars “showed a lot of heart and character, they never quit” according to head coach Roger Majeski, “they all did the little things, and each contributed”. Genesee finishes the season 20-22.
