Men's Basketball Wins Tip-Off Tournament in Overtime! vonSchiller wins 200th!!

The Championship game of the Genesee Community College Tip-off Tournament was the teams second thrilling come from behind victory in as many days. Genesee was down by 9 points throughout most of the second half, and at most 13 points, before tournament Most Valuable Player Quintin Redfern led the charge back for the Cougars to tie late in the game.

This past weekend Genesee’s Men’s Basketball team hosted its annual Tip – Off Tournament showcasing some the northeast’s finest teams. The Cougars were joined by Beaver County Community College (PA), Essex CC (NJ) and Lorain CC (OH) in what would prove to be an exciting tournament.

Friday nights first round match – up saw Essex CC jump out to a big early lead and then hold off a late charge from Lorain CC to earn a birth in the Championship game. Essex was led by Davorn Bryant’s 27 points & 11 rebounds, while Jacob Pope of Lorain registered 27 points.

In the second game of the night the Cougars of GCC, who trailed most of the game, battled back to force overtime and eventually would go on to win a hard fought 102 – 97 contest over Beaver County CC. Leon Nelson led the Cougars with 32 points and 16 rebounds, Terrell Rankin added 23 points, but it was tournament MVP Quintin Redfern who scored 20 of his 22 points in the second half and overtime that propelled the Cougars to victory. It was Redfern’s drive and dish to Leon Nelson for an emphatic dunk with 26 seconds left in overtime to seal the win.

The Championship game would see the Cougars again battle back from a second half deficit to force overtime, and go on to a thrilling 89 – 79 win over Essex CC. The Cougars without their leading scorer and rebounder Leon Nelson (left the game in the first half with an injury) would have to overcome a second half deficit of as many as 13 points. It was Tournament MVP Quintin Redfern who again saved his best for last scoring all 20 of his points in the second and overtime. Senior Jordan Henry also played a pivotal role in the comeback win scoring 16 of his 18 points in the second half. Clutch Free throw shooting down the stretch was one of the keys to victory with the Cougars hitting on 22 of their last 24 from the charity strip.

Tournament MVP Quintin Redfern was joined on the All Tournament Team by teammates Leon Nelson, and Terrell Rankin.

With the victory head coach Mike vonSchiller won his 200th game while at the helm at GCC!

The Cougars travel to Lakeland CC on Saturday in what will be another tough game for the Cougars.
