A 90 minute performance by the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra is one of several new changes to Genesee Community College Foundation’s Encore 2009. Todd and Kathy Bender of Batavia, chairs of this year’s Encore Celebration, announced that the annual holiday tradition is set for Wednesday, December 9, 2009 at 6:00 PM and will feature many new exciting changes adding to the merriment.
Encore is Genesee’s largest fundraiser to benefit the College’s Foundation Scholarship Fund and “Embracing the Holiday Spirit” is this year’s theme. The evening will begin with a Gala Reception and continue with, for the first time ever, a performance by the Grammy award winning Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra (BPO) in the Stuart Steiner Theatre.
New to this year’s holiday celebration is a ‘Wine and Cheese Prelude Reception’ with the BPO’s conductor, Paul Ferington. The special reception is open to guests who purchase the Conductor’s Circle and Golden Baton Society tickets. Paul Ferington is in his 25th year as a member of the conducting staff of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. During this time, he has conducted the Philharmonic in over 400 concerts at various locations around Western New York, Northern Pennsylvania, Southern Ontario, and at Kleinhans Music Hall.
Following the private Prelude Reception will be a ‘Gala Reception Grandioso’ for all ticket holders, at 6:00PM in the William W. Stuart Forum and will feature sensational food selections with all new menu items and a cash bar. The Gala Reception will feature live music by local musician, Derek Reiss and his “Dizzy-Jazz with a Spin” quartet.
Another new element to the evening will be an ‘Encore Energico Chance’; a drawing to win a Guest Conductorship or an Encore Concerto gift basket. Tickets for the drawing are $50 per ticket or $100 for three tickets. Tickets are only available pre-event, and will not be available during the evening. The drawing for the winner of the Guest Conductorship and Encore Concerto gift basket will be made at 7:30PM in the Forum during the Gala Reception Grandioso.
Following the Gala Reception Grandioso and ‘Encore Concerto Chance,’ the holiday pops concert featuring the two-time Grammy award winning Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra starts at 7:45PM in the Stuart Steiner Theatre. The BPO will fill the theatre with an hour and a half of Western New York’s finest holiday music. There will be new selections as well as sing-a-longs to old seasonal favorites.
The world-renowned Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra was founded in 1935. Since 1940, the Orchestra's permanent home has been Kleinhans Music Hall, a National Historic Site with an international reputation as one of the finest concert halls in the United States. The Orchestra presents more than one hundred Classics, Pops and Youth Concerts each year in Western New York.
Concluding the Encore 2009 will be a Delectable Dessert Finale at 9:30PM in the Forum.
“We’re excited about the new changes we’ve implemented to make the evening even more enjoyable,” Todd Bender said. “Encore is a great opportunity to celebrate the holiday season while supporting student scholarships at Genesee Community College.”
Proceeds are dedicated to the Genesee Community College Foundation specifically to support student scholarships. Sponsorship support is welcome at the following levels: Conductor’s Circle provides six tickets for $1,000 and Golden Baton Society provides four tickets for $500 and includes the special Wine and Cheese Prelude Reception’. Inner Circle guests receive two tickets for $300. Singular Platinum Patron tickets are $100 each. For reservations call Genesee Community College Foundation at 585-345-6809. The evening is black tie optional.
Last year, Genesee Community College Foundation awarded 464 scholarships to worthy and deserving students, a collective amount of $ 265,488. Encore is the Foundation’s most important scholarship fund raising event.
