The 2009 GCC men’s soccer team is in a rebuilding year having lost twelve players to scholarships from last season. The team will be relying upon its incoming freshman and key returners to match last season’s 13-7 record and make a run to the playoffs.
Among key returning players is Andy Follman (Waterport, NY) who was at the heart of last year’s defensive unit. Follman was last season’s most improved player and even better things are expected of him this season. Juan Camillo Villegas (Thomasvill, NC) will be expected to lead the front line on his return. Nationally ranked #40 in scoring in his freshman year, Villegas is expected to be a powerful player who will frequently find the back of the net. Ryan Winchip (Filmore, NY) will also be returning to the Cougars after having a very strong showing last season as an attacking full back with the coaching staff looking forward to plenty more from him. Other notable returner’s include central defender Josh Canfield (Hornell, NY) who wins everything in the air and local players from Batavia Dustin Holman and Mike Ziccardi.
The Cougars are also expecting a lot out of some of their talented freshman class. Ger Hayes (Limerick, Ireland) is an exciting prospect and should be dominant in the midfield, while also contributing in the goal scoring department. Daniel Kocyigit (Staffordshire, England) will also look to make an immediate impact and expected to get the ball in the net scoring key goals in his first year at GCC.
