The 2008 season was the beginning of a new era of GCC Men’s Soccer. Under first year coach Ken Gavin the team ended the season 13-7 and has shown through their performances that they have the potential to be one of the top teams in Division 3 NJCAA Soccer. The team climbed as high as #7 in the national rankings and along the way beat two nationally ranked Division I opponents they faced.
In order to have an outstanding team performance you need some great individual performances. Carlos Camacho, Jose Otero, Jose Hernandez and Jorge Zapata were all selected to the Western New York Athletic Conference First team and Jeff Asmah was selected for the second team. Jorge Zapata was also named to the All Conference second team. Zapata ended the season with 18 goals and 7 assists placing him nationally ranked at 14th in scoring. Hernandez was nationally ranked at 28th with his 12 goals and 7 assists. Also nationally ranked in scoring were Juan Camillo Villegas at 40th, Carlos Camacho at 46th.
With a new system in place the ’09 Cougars will be looking to improve on this season’s solid season. The team is currently in the process of recruiting both local and international players that will be a good fit to carry the team forward in the seasons to come.
