GCC Honors Student Athletes

Genesee Community College held its 20th Annual Awards Banquet on May 8 where they honored outstanding student-athletes and recognized each team on their athletic achievements for the 2008-2009 school

Genesee Community College held its 20th Annual Awards Banquet on May 8 where they honored outstanding student-athletes and recognized each team on their athletic achievements for the 2008-2009 school year. Highlights of the year included Women’s Basketball placing sixth in the national tournament, the highest in GCC Women’s Basketball history, Men’s Basketball ranking third during the season and Men’s Baseball moving to Division II, making it to the championship game where they were seeded first overall.

Individual awards were presented to various student-athletes based on their academic and athletic achievement. The Scholar-Athlete Award, presented to the student-athlete who has accomplished outstanding academic and athletic success throughout the year, went to Britney Buscaglia (Akron, NY) and Don Knavel (West Seneca, NY). The Athletic Directors Award, given to the student-athlete who has made the most significant contributions to the athletic program, was presented to Chris Page (Batavia, NY) and Sarah Barr (Middleport, NY). The Athletic Service Award went to Margaret Heater and Dolores Chiocco for their support and contribution to the athletic program. The Quantum Leap Award, presented to the team that has made the most significant changes from the previous season, was given to the Men’s Baseball team for their outstanding 2009 season.

Coaches awards were presented to the following student-athletes: Jaime Rodrigues (London, Ontario)- Women’s Softball; Alejandro Gonzalez (Valencia, Venezuela)- Men’s Baseball; Cynnetha Bellinger (Binghamton, NY)-Women’s Basketball; Curtis Jackson(Brooklyn, NY)- Men’s Basketball; Coty Brawdy (Angola, NY)- Men’s Lacrosse; Jenna Ferrando (LeRoy, NY)- Women’s Soccer; Jose Otero (Bogota, Columbia)- Men’s Soccer; Bobbie Jo Passamonte (Corfu, NY)- Women’s Swimming; Mike Hoerbelt(Lancaster, NY)- Men’s Swimming; Jenn Turner (Batavia, NY)- Women’s Volleyball. The Coaches Award is presented to the student-athlete who has made a significant contribution to their particular team, as chosen by the head coach.

The Athletic Trainer Award was presented to Charlie Palmer (Pavilion, NY) for her excellence in GCC’s Athletic Training program. The Physical Education Studies Award, given to a superior second year Physical Education student, was presented to Crystal Hoag (Batavia, NY). Finally, the Sports Management /Fitness Management Award was presented to Felix Correa-Hernandez (Guatire, Venezuela) for his excellence in the field of Sport Management.  The Lloyd Huling award winners are given to a male and female that have been very active in the inturmural sports for the year.  This years winners were Greg Cashdollar and Bianca Graham-Brown.

The Cougars Athletic Department looks to build on these awards and accomplishments to have a successful 2009-2010 athletic year.
