GCC Seeks Nominations for Honorary Associate Degree Recipients

Nominations are due by February 1, 2009
Genesee Community College is again accepting nominations for Honorary Associate degrees that are conferred at the College’s annual commencement ceremony each May. Any person is welcome to make nominations.

Genesee seeks individuals associated with the College who have achieved business, professional, civic and scholarly accomplishments, as well as made notable contributions to the College or to academic disciplines taught at the College. Recipients of honorary degrees are individuals whose accomplishments, contributions or leadership are well beyond ordinary standards, and serve as an inspiration to members of the College community and as role models for students and citizens of the region. Nominations are due by February 1, 2009. It is anticipated that one honorary award will be made at the May Commencement ceremonies.

Last year, an Honorary Associate degree was awarded to Mr. Anthony T. Zambito, posthumously. His family accepted the degree on his behalf, recognizing his nearly half-century commitment to Genesee Community College. He was an active supporter of its establishment in the mid-1960s, one of the founding members of the board of trustees, and the longest-serving trustee in the College’s history. In 2006, Genesee awarded Honorary Associate degrees to three other distinguished individuals: Dr. Alfred C. O’Connell, Genesee’s founding president; William W. Stuart, a long-serving member of the Genesee County Board of Supervisors who provided support for the College in the early years; and Neil T. Burns, a dynamic community leader who was one of the founding trustees of the College.
