Art Week, Silent Auction and an Open House Hosted by Arcade Campus Center

The Arcade Campus of Genesee Community College is hosting several dynamic events this month benefiting the local community with cultural, commemorative, academic and career opportunities.

The week of December 8 through December 12 is “The Week of the Arts,” kicked-off on Tuesday, December 9 at 5:00 pm with readings from the Arcade Campus Anthology. The Campus Center Anthology was originally founded in 1999 by a group of Arcade Campus students and faculty. The program took a hiatus until recently when honors student, Leah Reino, resurrected the project as part of her Honor’s Program portfolio. The new anthology is appropriately entitled, “Rebirth.”

“The Week of the Arts” also features an exhibit of Arcade students’ artwork beginning on Monday, December 8. The student exhibit is coupled with a very special Silent Auction to help the Arcade Campus Center raise money for a unique memorial rock and sculpture that will be dedicated to students and faculty who are now deceased. All proceeds from the Silent Auction will be dedicated to a special bronze pour for the sculpture. The pour will be open to the public, not only helping commemorate the many Campus Center friends who have passed away, but it will also be an educational opportunity about the process of pouring liquid metals which will ultimately be used to decorate the specially selected memorial rock.

“The vision of this multifaceted project has been to establish a small outdoor garden with benches and the memorial rock and sculpture as a center piece,” Dr. Deborah DiNoto, associate dean of the Arcade Campus Center said. “We are combining the resources and the interests of many different people and groups to make this vision a reality in 2009. From start to finish, it will be a collaborative learning opportunity for all.”

There will be three categories of student artwork on display for the exhibit and Silent Auction and each will have its own Artists Reception during the Silent Auction week (December 8 – 12). The Ceramics class reception will be Wednesday, December 10 from 2:30 to 3:30 pm, followed by the Drawing class on Thursday, December 11 from 10:00 to 11:00 am, and finally the Painting class on Friday, December 12th from 10:00 – 11:00 am. The entire art display will be on display throughout “The Week of the Arts,” December 8 -12.

The Auction will also have some unique items for bidding such as student designed and produced tie-dye shirts, and original artwork created art instructors, Sara Tobin and Mary Lyn Nutting. The Silent Auction works by allowing participates to write their names and their bidding price for an interested piece of artwork on a bidding sheet which will be posted for all to see throughout the week.

Lastly, “The Week of the Arts” and Arcade’s Silent Auction features another very significant opportunity. The Arcade Campus Center is hosting an evening Open House on December 10 from 6:00 – 9:00 pm. With many companies across the nation beginning to lay-off employees or close down their facilities, this is the perfect time to learn a new skill and gain a competitive edge in a challenging job market. The Arcade Open House offers a complete overview of the different academic degrees and programs offered by the College, and helps students of all ages get ready for the spring semester which starts January 20, 2009.
