Paul S. Speranza, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and Vice Chairman, General Counsel, and Secretary of Wegmans Food Markets, Inc. will be the keynote speaker at the 2008 Wolcott J. Humphrey III Symposium on Leadership and Community Life. The theme for the event is Kick It Upstate: Growing our Region. Mr. Speranza’s talk will focus on economic growth issues in Upstate New York.
The Symposium is scheduled for Thursday, September 11, from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Genesee Community College’s Batavia campus. Reservations may be made by calling the Office of External Affairs at 585-343-0055 x6234.
As Chairman of the Board of Directors of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Paul Speranza addresses, works with, and calls to action state and local chambers, associations, other business groups, and civic and charitable organizations to advance pro-growth policies and programs. Speranza has three goals: first, improve education and workforce development, especially for the economically disadvantaged; second, improve health care affordability, quality, and access; and third, strengthen, coordinate, and focus the U.S. Chamber’s initiatives to better align them with those of the state and local chambers.
Speranza joined Wegmans in 1976, where he chairs a number of committees and is responsible for legal, tax, government relations, and labor relations, among other management duties. He is a member of the board of the Business Council of New York State, where he also serves as vice chairman of the Finance Committee of the Rochester Business Alliance and chairs its Business Advocacy/Community Issues Committee. He is a member of the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance Taxpayer Advisory Council.
Speranza is a graduate of Syracuse University (BS, 1969), the University of San Francisco (JD, 1971), and New York University (LLM in Taxation, 1972), which is consistently ranked as the number one graduate tax program in the United States.
Family and friends of Wolcott J. (Jay) Humphrey III, who died suddenly in September 2001, established the Wolcott J. Humphrey III Symposium on Leadership and Community Life in his memory. Mr. Humphrey, who served as President of Pavilion State Bank (now part of Five Star Bank) at the time of his death, was one of the region’s foremost civic leaders and a strong proponent of leadership development.
The Symposium brings speakers with a national or regional reputation to Genesee Community College to discuss some facet of the subject of leadership. Past speakers have included Syracuse University Basketball Coach Jim Boeheim, Paychex CEO Thomas Golisano, and William Hudnut III, former U.S. Representative.
“The goal is to encourage local business and professional people to think about the subject of leadership in new and different ways – and to leave the symposium with practical ideas they can use to build and improve their own businesses and professional lives,” said 2008 Symposium Chair Peggy Marone.
