GCC Baseball Wins Four Games in Three Days

The GCC baseball team has won four games in the last three days including two huge Region III games yesterday at Dwyer Stadium. The team now moves to 21-11 overall and 14-8 in Region III.

On Tuesday April 29, 2008, the team played a much improved Niagara Community College. The team split a double header winning the first game 1-0 and dropping the second game 2-1. During game one, Matt LaPorte (Westfield, NY) got the game winning hit in the bottom of the eighth inning. Andre Kinder (Albion, NY) got the win on the mound, pitching all eight innings and allowing three hits while striking out 14 batters. In game two, the Cougars left runners at first and third in the bottom of the seventh and went on to lose 2-1. Chad Blackmon (Rochester, NY) led the team on the day going 3-4 from the plate.

On Wednesday April 30, 2008, the Cougars traveled to Binghamton, NY to play Broome Community College. The team won the first game 8-6 in nine innings. Dave Gardiner (Ingersoll, ON) was 3-5 on the day with three RBI’s, while Taylor Castrillo (Sarnia, ON) went 3-5 with two RBI’s. Mike McGuillivray (Mississauga, ON) got the win and Brandon Lindsley (Chaffee, NY) recorded the save. In game two, the team left players in scoring position four out of seven innings and failed to capitalize taking the 7-6 loss. Gardiner led the team in hitting going 3-4, while Felix Hernandez (Guatire, VEN) went 2-3 with a triple.

Yesterday, the team returned home to play Mohawk Valley Community College who was also 12-8 in Region III play and working to position themselves in the upcoming playoffs, which start next week. In game one, the Cougars came out strong scoring ten runs in the first three innings to beat MVCC with the five inning mercy rule. Nate Parrino (Brockport, NY) went 3-3 with a double and three RBI’s. Chris Page (Batavia, NY) got the win pitching five innings allowing only two hits while striking out nine batters. In game two, the team came from behind in the sixth and seventh innings to win a 4-3 game. With a runner on third and two outs, Parrino got the game winning hit. Coach Sherman noted that “this was a big two game series and we knew how important it was to getting into the Region III Tournament. I am very proud of the way our team came out and played. I hope this team continues to accept the challenges coming to them in the next couple of weeks.”

The team travels to Erie Community College on Saturday May 3, 2008 before wrapping up their regular season at Dwyer Stadium on Sunday May 4, 2008 against Tompkins-Cortland Community College.
