Genesee Baseball Shuts Out Columbia-Greene CC

On Sunday April 27, 2008, the Genesee Community College baseball team traveled to Hudson in New York and brought home two wins in only ten innings against Columbia-Greene Community College. They won the first game 12-0 in five innings (Mercy Run Rule) and the second game 26-0. Ten players for GCC had at least two hits, and two pitchers combined for 15 strikeouts and allowed only two hits.

In game one, Taylor Castrillo (Sarnia, ON) went 3-4 and Felix Hernandez (Guatire, VEN) went 1-2 with two walks to lead the team. The team scored 12 runs in five innings on seven hits. Mike McGuillivray (Mississauga, ON) pitched a complete game striking out eight batters with no walks in five innings.

In game two, the team scored a record 26 runs in the first three innings. Dave Gardiner (Ingersoll, ON) went 3-4 and Matt LaPorte (Westfield, NY) went 2-2 for the team. Jason Kirkum (Oakfield-Alabama, NY) pitched a complete game with seven strike-outs and no walks.

“I was most impressed with the way we handled ourselves hustling on and off the field and not letting the circumstance of the game become a circus,” Coach Sherman stated. “We are starting to play some of our best baseball now; we are healthy as a team for the first time and all of our players seem to be on the same page. It should be an exciting finish to the year for Genesee Baseball.”

The team is 17-9 overall and 10-6 in Region III play.
