Cougar Baseball Wins Three out of Four on Weekend

This weekend the Cougar baseball team won three out of four games to improve their overall record to 13-9 on the year. On Saturday April 19, 2008, the team came back and scored seven runs in the top of the seventh inning to beat Niagara County Community College, 12-8. Chris Page (Batavia, NY) led the way with two homeruns and three RBI’s. Felix Hernandez (Guatire, VEN) had a great performance going 3-4 from the plate with a solo homerun and three RBI’s. Getting his first college win was pitcher, Tyler Gilmore (Middlesex, PA), who pitched three scoreless innings giving up only two hits. In game two of the doubleheader, the team was held to only five hits and lost, 1-0. With the loss, the team moves to 6-6 in Region III play.

On Sunday April 20, 2008 at Dwyer Stadium, after a slow start to the doubleheader, the team scored a total of 22 runs in ten innings to beat Brock University, 10-9 and 11-6. The team was led by Andre Kinder (Albion, NY) in the first game with a 3-4 performance including a triple, and Dominick Garcia (Buffalo, NY) who went 3-4 with a walk and stolen base. Brandon Lindsley (Chaffee, NY) got his first win of his college career in game one. In the second game, Page was 3-4 with two homeruns and five RBI’s. The team used five pitchers to secure the victory.

After the weekend, Coach Sherman noted that his team is “still not playing our best, but we are beginning to show signs that we are ready to make a push toward Regional’s. We will have to play better or we may not be playing in Regional’s this season and that would be wrong because I still believe we have one of the best teams in Region III.”

The team will travel to Jefferson CC on Thursday and Columbia Greene on Friday of this week before returning home on Tuesday April 29, 2008 for a 2:00pm double header against Niagara County Community College.
