The men’s lacrosse team (3-1) traveled to Mercyhurst NE on Thursday March 27, 2008 and lost their first season game, 7-11.
The GCC Cougars fought hard the entire game. For more than three quarters, the game was back and forth with a one goal difference. The Saints of Mercyhurst were able to net a couple goals and hold on in the snow for the win.
The defensive group played extremely well forcing the Saints to take several long range shots and goalie Coty Brawdy (Angola, NY) played one of his best games with 21 saves. Don Knavel (West Seneca, NY) had a team high ten ground ball pickups and also scored a goal. Ross Johnson (Hilton, NY) was also strong on the defensive end helping shutdown their attack, clearing the ball, and picking up seven ground balls.
GCC's scoring came from seven different players each scoring one goal; Cory Blackburn (Hilton, NY), Steve Dollinger (Medina, NY), Justin Nanticoke (Akron, NY), Dan Page (Medina, NY), Dusty Parker (Akron, NY), and Tyler Stiles (Hilton, NY). Stiles dished out two assists and Dollinger and Page dished out an assist each.
Prior to this defeat, GCC won three straight against SUNY Fredonia (NCLL), Cayuga CC, and Tompkins-Cortland. In the last two victories, Nanticoke lead the way with a total of eight goals and six assists. Goalie, Coty Brawdy, came up big with a total of 35 saves.
The GCC Cougars will face SUNY Delhi on Sunday March 30, 2008 at 1:00pm. The Cougars hope to rebound off of their first loss in order to record their fourth victory of the season.
