Genesee Community College Announces March Student of the Month

Genesee Community College is pleased to name Velicia Stewart Student of the Month for March. Velicia, a 1979 graduate of Kendall Jr./Sr. High School, is a Communications and Media Arts program major at Genesee. She is a very active student who serves as an officer in Phi Theta Kappa, is a member of the Honors Program, and is a staff writer and columnist for The Courier, Genesee’s student newspaper, among many other clubs and activities.

Velicia was recently notified that she has received the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence, which recognizes SUNY’s most outstanding students. In addition to grade point average, candidates for the Chancellor’s Award must have demonstrated significant contributions to the greater campus community. Velicia was also nominated for Who’s Who magazine in New York and Pennsylvania.

Velicia, a resident of Lyndonville, NY, plans to transfer to SUNY Brockport upon completing her studies at Genesee to pursue a Masters Degree in Journalism/Broadcasting and Communications. She says her dream job is to be the governor of New York State, but for now she is content to write and report on her findings for the news – maybe even on CNN.

Velicia, who has three sons – Gregory, Brian, and Daniel, says that she has been impressed with the one-on-one attention that she has received while studying at Genesee.

“There were a handful of professors who could see my potential before I realized it myself,” Velicia said. “They took me under their wings and helped me reach beyond what I thought was possible.”
