Art Contest Celebrates Spirit of Earth Day

Earth Day was established to inspire awareness of and appreciation for our environment, and this year Genesee Community College and Present Tense have joined to sponsor a contest that celebrates that spirit. Held in conjunction with Genesee’s third annual Cool Kids Eco-Fest, The Earth Day Art Contest encourages people of all ages to create original art or literature with an environmental theme.

Artwork will be displayed at Genesee Community College from April 14 until the Eco-Fest celebration on April 17, scheduled from 5:00-8:00 pm. An Artist’s Reception and artwork exhibit will then be held at Present Tense on Saturday, April 19 at 2:00 pm.

“This is a great way for people throughout the community to get a chance to view the works of art and literature on display at both the college and the bookstore,” said Donna Rae Sutherland, Associate Director of Marketing Communications and the Co-Advisor to the College’s Earth Club.

Entries may take many forms, from literary arts –a poem, story, or essay, to visual arts such as a painting, sculpture, poster or wind chime. Entrants can also combine the two art forms to create a collaborative work of art that blends both literary and visual skills. Special consideration will be given to projects that incorporate recycled materials.

Entries must be dropped off at Present Tense, located at 101 Washington Avenue in Batavia, or at Genesee Community College Office D110 by April 11, 2008. Each entry must include an entry form, which is available at or by calling the MarCom Office at Genesee Community College at 585-343-0055 x 6616. Prizes will be awarded in different categories; people of all ages and skill levels are encouraged to submit work.
