Alissa Andrews, Exceptional Student Athlete at Genesee Community College

Alissa Andrews isn’t waiting for her ship to come in – she’s swimming out to meet it. The 19-year-old, a student at Genesee Community College in Batavia, NY, is making waves at the school, both academically and athletically.

Alissa graduated from Phoenix Central Schools in Phoenix, NY, in 2006. She decided that Genesee Community College was a perfect fit for her because it offered an Occupational Therapy Assistant degree program as well as an opportunity to participate on the swim team. Alissa moved into College Village, Genesee’s apartment-style housing complex, and began taking classes in the Fall of 2006. Since then, she has worked tirelessly to obtain certification as an occupational therapy assistant.

“My dream job is to work with children as an Occupational Therapy Assistant,” Alissa said. “I’m particularly interested in aquatic therapy.”

Alissa’s love for water has translated into success on Genesee’s swim team. Last year at nationals, Alissa was a seven time CSCAA All-American in the 200 Fly, 400 IM, 1650 Free, 200 Medley Relay, 400 Medley Relay, 200 Free Relay, and 400 Free Relay. She has generously volunteered her free time to be active in life guarding during open swim hours, swimming lessons, and summer swimming camps.

At the end of the swim season last year, Alissa was recognized with the Coach’s Award and in December 2007 she was named Genesee’s Student of the Month. In recognition of her strong leadership skills, Alissa was named captain of the women’s swim team this season. In addition to placing fourth in the 200 individual medley and third in the 200 breast at the most recent invitational in January 2008, Alissa has helped to guide nine freshmen teammates and teach them the traditions and pride of working together as a team.

“The pool is her second home,” said Coach Scott Hunsinger. “She is often there either studying or swimming, and she serves as a lifeguard for the Early Bird swim every day at 7 am. She has a positive attitude that is infectious.”

Alissa’s family, parents Dave and Beth Andrews, sister Abby, and brothers Chris and Ben Bonnet, are proud to see her accomplishing her goals at Genesee. As for Alissa, she still thinks Genesee is a perfect fit for her.

“My favorite aspect of attending Genesee is that the teachers and staff here are so helpful,” she said. “I haven’t had any trouble getting comfortable here. It’s been a great experience so far.”
