The Lady Cougars Enter Break Undefeated

The women’s basketball team knocked off Mohawk Valley on Saturday and enters the break with an overall record of 8-0. The Lady Cougars gave up 39 points in the first half of play and went into half-time down by a margin of 12 points. During the second half, Genesee fought their way back on both ends of the floor. On the defensive end, the team held Mohawk Valley to 21 points and only four field goals. The stops on the defensive end were led by team captain, Latoya Anderson (Bronx, NY), who contained Mohawk Valley’s talented point guard.

Leading the offensive attack for the Lady Cougars was Ariel Smith (Wallkill, NY) with 21 points. She was 8 for 15 from the field and 4 for 5 from behind the arc. Erica Austin (Utica, NY), who played in front of her home crowd, netted 14 points and was 8 for 11 from the free throw line. Chatanie Williams (Rochester, NY) added 10 points and 9 rebounds while Bianca Jones (Long Island City, NY) chipped in 8 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.

At the end of regulation, the Lady Cougars were victorious with a score of 70-60. The team shot 56% (9-16) from behind the arc and ended the game with 41 rebounds and 14 steals.

The team is ranked No. 13 in the NJCAA poll (as of December 5, 2007) and No.1 in the Region III coaches’ poll (as of December 3, 2007).

The Lady Cougars tip off the New Year at Sheridan College (Canada) at 1pm on Saturday January 5, 2008.
