Genesee Community College received a Silver Medallion of Achievement Award from the National Council for Marketing and Public Relations (NCMPR) for its view book, the College’s flagship recruitment publication used primarily for face-to-face engagements such as high school visits and college fairs.
The award was presented at the annual District 1 conference for the NCMPR in Annapolis, Maryland, held November 4-6, 2007. The NCMPR, an American Association of Community Colleges affiliate, advances communication-related practices among its more than 1,500 members that represent 600 colleges in America and abroad.
“Artistically, my goal for the picture book was to present the college in a series of ‘moodscapes,’ illustrating not only some of its more interesting spaces, like the union, but also evoking Genesee’s unique feel, which is open, modern, and student centered,” said Hal Legg, Genesee’s Recruitment Communications Specialist who worked to design the view book.
Students gave input about the view book design, and many of them appear in the photographs throughout the publication. The book outlines basic information about Genesee including tuition, degree majors, athletics, transfer options, and clubs and activities in a format that features full-page photographs of real students participating in real events.
“It’s satisfying to share this award with the students because they were so willing to contribute their time and talent, and also because they really like Genesee, and I think that comes through on the pages,” Legg said.
This is the second award the view book has won. Earlier this year it received an honorable mention in the “Print Media” category of the Communicator Awards, an international competition recognizing excellence in advertising, public relations, corporate communications, graphic design and identity across all industries.
