This past weekend, November 3rd and 4th, the Genesee Community College Women’s Volleyball team won the District L championship title at the Community College of Rhode Island in Providence. The Lady Cougars, Region 3 champions, competed against Harcum College from Region 19 and host school Community College of Rhode Island from Region 21. On Saturday, the Lady Cougars defeated Harcum 30-14, 30-15, 30-16. Genesee then won two of their three games with CCRI, 30-22, 30-27, 26-30. Teresa Conti, Ashley Uberty, and Heather Lieberman, each being named to the Western New York Athletic Conference All Conference Team, were instrumental in the team’s wins on Saturday. Conti (Attica High School) earned 14 kills and 8 blocks, Lieberman (Wayne High School) contributed with 10 digs and 12 kills, and Uberty (Leroy High School) added 7 service aces and 19 digs. Of the three competing teams, the two with the best records out of the six games played would advance to the championships the following day.
Emotions were running high on Sunday morning for the championship match at 11:00AM. The Lady Cougars dominated the CCRI Knights in a three out of five game match, 30-14, 30-25, 30-20. Jerrica McAndrew (Ellicottville High School) had an outstanding match with 12 kills and 13 digs. Running the offense was Cynthia Zayas, a freshman from Richmond Virginia, with 35 assists and 7 digs. Finally, Mandie Bartz (Attica High School) was a force to be reckoned with adding 12 blocks and 12 kills.
The victory earned the Lady Cougars a bid to the National Tournament at Scottsdale Community College in Scottsdale, Arizona. This will be Head Coach Roger Majeski’s twelfth appearance at Nationals. The team will travel on November 12th to compete in the tournament beginning on the 15th, with playoffs scheduled for Saturday the 17th. The seeding for the tournament will be determined on Wednesday and the ladies from Genesee hope to earn a 10th through 14th seed. As always, Coach Majeski and his team hope to exceed former national appearances and place in the national championship match.
