Veterans' Education Scholarship Launched at Genesee Community College

As Americans recognize the contributions of our servicemen and women in the coming week with Veterans’ Day, Genesee Community College is pleased to introduce a new Veterans’ Education Scholarship designed to promote higher education with our nation’s veterans. The new program is spearheaded by Dr. Roger Triftshauser, Rear Admiral, Naval Reserve Dental Corps (retired), a well-known public servant and local orthodontist.

“The scholarship is our way of thanking veterans for their dedicated service, while ensuring that deserving men and women have the opportunity to undertake a quality college education,” Dr. Triftshauser said. “Our goal is to raise $10,000.”
The new Veterans’ Education Scholarship will augment federal veteran benefits, helping veterans return to college to obtain vital career training. The new scholarship fund is earmarked specifically for veterans; it will provide financial assistance to veterans enrolled at Genesee Community College.

“Sometimes even a small financial boost allows a veteran to seek a higher education to prepare for a meaningful career,” said PFC Ken Truesdell, a Genesee Community College Math Science student and a member of the US Army Reserves, currently serving in Afghanistan.

Dr. Triftshauser stated that the initiative to raise money for the new Veterans’ Scholarship Fund was formally announced November 1 in his Batavia office. Several veterans, including two Genesee Community College students, representatives from Veterans’ Service Agencies from all four counties (Genesee, Livingston, Orleans and Wyoming), as well as New York State Assemblymen Steve Hawley and Dan Burling were present for the scholarship fund kick-off.

Letters have been mailed at this “Time of Remembrance” to many area veterans, and all community members are invited to share in this gift of higher education, job and career training for our veterans. Tax deductible contributions of all sizes are gratefully accepted and acknowledged, and are payable to Genesee Community College Foundation and may be mailed to:
