Last weekend, August 24th and 25th, the Genesee Community College women’s volleyball team attended the Central Ohio Invite in Columbus. The Lady Cougars have certainly set the tone for the 2007 season, coming home with first place from the opening tournament of the year. In pool play on Friday, G.C.C. beat Indiana Tech JV (30-16, 30-24), Southern State (28-30, 30-9, 15-2), and Clark State (24-30, 30-27, 15-13). Coming out of pool play in first place earned the team a first-round bye for Saturday. The women went up against the Columbus State and the win advanced the women to the finals. After a brief interruption of tournament play in the form of a tornado warning, the Genesee women ended the weekend by defeating the College of Southern Maryland 30-18, 28-30, 15-6. Leading the team in kills with 29 for the weekend, Wayne High School graduate Heather Lieberman had an all-around impressive performance with an additional 4 blocks and 13 aces. Brooke England racked up 30 digs, 22 assists, and 9 aces. Attica natives Teresa Conti and Mandie Bartz did significant damage in the middle with 21 kills and 18 blocks from Bartz, and 20 kills, 9 blocks, as well as 15 aces from Conti, whose serving proved to be quite effective over the course of the tournament. Ashley Uberty’s serving skills were impressive with 16 aces. Uberty, a LeRoy High School graduate, also added 8 kills, 3 blocks, and 4 assists. The women from Genesee will travel to Binghamton on the 1st of September for the Broome Community College Volleyball Tune-Up Tournament and Flint, Michigan the following weekend for the Mott Community College tournament.
