Five Genesee Community College Faculty Receive SUNY Chancellor's Award

Five Genesee Community College faculty members have received SUNY Chancellor’s Awards, which recognize outstanding contributions to their respective professional fields, campuses, communities, and the public at large.

The five faculty members are: Norm Gayford, Professor of English; Allen Kidder, Associate Dean of the Albion Campus Center; Phil Pickering, Assistant Professor of Mathematics; Garth Swanson, Instructor of History; and Tim Tomczak, Associate Professor of Psychology.

Norm Gayford, a resident of Warsaw, NY, began as an adjunct professor at Genesee in 1986; he became a full-time professor in 1988. For ten years he served in a volunteer position as Executive Secretary of SUNY Council on Writing. Norm is widely published, including the distinction of being the first Genesee Community College faculty member to have an online article published in a professional journal. Norm holds a B.A. in English from St. Lawrence University, a M.A.T. in English/Writing from Brown University, and a M.A. in English from SUNY Brockport. He is very involved in the local community, serving as a past member of the Warsaw Development Association’s Promotions and Economic Development Committee; he has also appeared in several of the GCC Forum Players’ productions, most recently in Moon Over Buffalo.

Allen Kidder has served as associate dean, Genesee Community College at Albion since August 2000. He oversees the operations of the Albion Campus Center and manages a staff of four administrative personnel and 43 faculty members. Prior to working at Genesee Community College, Allen was assistant to the general manager at Calspan Corporation, a $50 million high technology organization in Buffalo, NY, that provided research, development, test, and evaluation services to its customers. Allen holds a B.A. in Industrial Economics from Purdue University and a M.A. in Economics from Indiana University. A resident of Akron, NY, Allen serves on the Village Planning Board and on the Board of Directors for the Main Street Revitalization Committee. He is a commercial pilot with multi-engine, instrument, flight instructor, and instrument instructor ratings.

Phil Pickering is an assistant professor of Mathematics at Genesee Community College, where he has been teaching since 2002. Phil is also an adjunct lecturer at SUNY Brockport and an adjunct instructor at Monroe Community College. He has been nominated for Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers on four separate occasions between 2002-2004. He serves as the advisor for the Genesee Community College Math Club, is a member of the Academic Senate, and provides academic advising to approximately ten students per academic year. Phil, a resident of Rochester, NY, holds a M.A. in Mathematics from SUNY Brockport.

Garth Swanson, a resident of Stafford, NY, has been teaching history at Genesee Community College since 1992. Prior to teaching at Genesee, Garth served as a part-time history instructor at Empire State College in Jamestown, NY. He is the history mentor for the Honors Program at Genesee and is the chair of the Curriculum Committee. He is a current member of both the Teaching and Learning with Technology and Global Education Committees at Genesee. Garth is a member of the Board of Directors for the Holland Purchase Historical Society in Batavia, NY. He earned his A.A. in Social Science from Jamestown Community College, his B.A. in History at St. Bonaventure University, and his M.A. in History from Ohio University.

Tim Tomczak has been teaching at Genesee Community College since 1991; he was named associate professor of Psychology in 1996. Tim is widely published in psychological periodicals and has reviewed and updated many psychology texts. He is the co-chair of the Success to Graduation Committee at Genesee and also serves as a lecturer in Psychology at SUNY Geneseo. Tim is a resident of Elba, NY, and is very active in the community. He was the team manager for the Genesee Amateur Hockey Association, Midget Empire team for the 2006-2007 season and is a member of the Board of Directors for the Genesee Youth Soccer League. Tim holds a B.A. in Psychology from Mercyhurst College and a M.A. in General Psychology from SUNY Geneseo.

Each of these distinguished faculty members were honored at a reception on Thursday, August 23, 2007.
