Successful Alumni Return for Annual Discover the Stars Scholarship Reception

Genesee Community College Foundation scholarship recipients and their families and Foundation donors will gather in the Conable Technology Building on Monday evening, September 10, 2007 to meet, greet, and share stories of student achievements and career aspirations. For this year’s reception, two successful alumni have been invited to share their stories and experiences at Genesee that guided them on the road to success.

Lori Stupp, Regional Director of United Way and a member of the AAA Speakers Bureau, and Steven Tanner, Project Engineer with Clark Patterson Associates, are the featured speakers for the evening.

Lori Stupp graduated from Genesee Community College in 1989 with an Associates degree in Travel-Tourism. She was an active member of the Travel Club while at Genesee and, after graduation, she was a member of the AAA Associate Council for 13 years. Lori managed the Batavia Office of AAA until its recent closure; she is currently the Regional Director of United Way and has been the United Way Campaign Chair for the past two years.

In addition to her work as a professional fundraiser and a volunteer resource manager for various groups, Lori is a member of the AAA Speakers Bureau, where she speaks to schools and other organizations about travel. Lori, a Batavia resident, takes an active part in community service. She is a member of the Genesee County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, a former member of YWCA Board of Directors, past chairman of the YWCA Fabulous Females Brunch, and a past member of the CASA and United Way Boards of Directors. Lori was part of the first group of alumni inducted into the Genesee Community College Alumni Hall of Fame in August 2007.

She said, “I was humbled and thrilled to be included in the Alumni Hall of Fame. GCC has been a lifelong blessing.”

Steven Tanner is a 1993 graduate and former President’s Scholarship recipient at Genesee Community College. He was President of Phi Theta Kappa, Genesee’s honor society, and the first graduate from Genesee’s Honors program. Based on his success at Genesee, Steve was awarded a Merit Scholarship from Clarkson University, where he graduated cum laude upon completing his Bachelor’s degree. He later received his Master’s in Business Administration from Franklin University in Columbus, OH.

Steve has worked for several engineering firms in both Ohio and New York. He has participated in projects at Roswell Park Cancer Hospital; Nationwide Arena, home of the NHL Columbus Blue Jackets; the Center of Science and Industry, Columbus, Ohio, a museum geared toward children; and multiple projects with the Genesee County Economic Development Center, including Project Manager for the proposed Med Tech Park in Batavia. He is a member of 2007 Leadership Genesee. Steve, who lives with his wife and children in Batavia, cites his attendance at Genesee Community College as the foundation of his career. He said, “I feel that I took advantage of the many opportunities provided at GCC and my experiences here contributed to my confidence and success at Clarkson and in my career.”
