Genesee Appoints New Associate Deans At Two Campus Centers

Genesee Community College is pleased to announce that Karen Taylor and James Simon have respectively been appointed as the new associate deans for the Lakeville Campus Center and the new Medina Campus Center currently under construction.

Karen Taylor has been acting as Associate Dean at the Lakeville Campus Center since January 2007. In her short tenure there she has been appointed a member of the Business Education Alliance that works closely with businesses and schools, both secondary and post-secondary, in Livingston County. She is also a member of the Jobs Service Employer Committee and is serving on the Livingston County Chamber of Commerce’s Academic Scholarship Committee.

Taylor, a resident of Batavia, has been a faculty member at Genesee for the past ten years and is also a graduate of the College. “I am well aware of what a community college has to offer its students and the array of opportunities available,” Taylor said. “I can offer first hand advice to students based upon my own experiences at Genesee.”  Ms. Taylor’s education includes earning a BA in English from Utah State University and an MS in Education from Nazareth College of Rochester, NY. She was honored with a NY State Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2002.

James Simon has been an Instructor of History at Genesee Community College since August 2005. His background includes serving in the US Air Force, where he most recently held the position of Strategic Planner and Director of Policy, Doctrine, Education, and Training for the Joint Personnel Recovery Agency at Fort Belvoir, VA. He has extensive experience in leading, managing, and supervising diverse, results-oriented teams as a former helicopter pilot, staff officer, director of operations, and squadron commander.

Mr. Simon holds a MA in Middle East History from the University of Utah and a BS in History from the US Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. He is an author and lecturer whose work has been published in scholarly journals and whose presentations have been given to a variety of organizations.  “I believe I am a good fit for this position, and I am very grateful for the opportunity to serve in my new role in the Medina Campus Center,” Mr. Simon said. “I’m particularly looking forward to bringing greater access to higher education to my local community."

The construction of the new Medina Campus Center is underway, and is expected to be ready for occupancy late this summer or early this fall. The 9,000 square foot facility will include a state-of-the-art science laboratory and computer lab, five to seven classrooms, offices for administrative staff, and a reception area and lobby.

“As the sixth campus location for Genesee Community College, we are all very excited about increasing access to educational opportunities throughout Orleans County,” Jerry Kozlowski, Dean of the College’s six Campus Centers and of The BEST Center. “Both Karen and Jim will make dynamic contributions at the helm of each Campus Center, but also to the overall Medina and Lakeville communities. I personally encourage residents of each community to call either of them to talk about areas of interest and concern.”
