College Village Scholarship Rewards Good Citizens at Genesee Community College

As more students take advantage of the educational and economic benefits of community colleges, Genesee Community College announces that the College’s Foundation recently approved a $250,000, 5-year scholarship fund for the Citizenship Scholarship to allocate $50,000 each year for student housing grants of $1,000 per year per eligible student. That’s 50 students each year.

Located in Batavia, New York halfway between the cities of Buffalo and Rochester and not far from Niagara Falls and Toronto, Genesee Community College is nestled amid the scenic villages and farmland of the Genesee region. Since its founding in 1966 as part of the prestigious State University of New York, Genesee has become one of the most highly-respected community colleges in the United States. The College has twice been recognized as one of the nation’s leaders in community college enrollment growth over the past three years.

The Citizenship Scholarship is designed to attract exemplary students to College Village, Genesee’s apartment-style housing facilities that are just a three-minute walk from the main campus in Batavia. Worthy and deserving students who demonstrate key citizenship qualities such as leadership abilities, interpersonal skills, and school or community involvement may be eligible to receive the award. From Eagle Scouts to 4-H Ambassadors, church members to camp counselors, College officials hope to recognize and support leadership abilities. The scholarship is also open to non-traditional aged students who wish to live in high quality student housing while studying full-time at Genesee.

“The staff here is so friendly and they offer a lot of fun activities” said Nicholas Bennett, a native of Buffalo, NY. Nicholas is a Resident Assistant at College Village and a student in Genesee’s Tourism and Hospitality Management degree program. “College Village is a place away from home where you can enjoy college life.”

College Village promises a clean, safe, convenient, and affordable living experience for Genesee Community College students. Apartment-style suites are furnished, and feature ample kitchen and dining areas, living rooms and two to four bedrooms, complete with wireless Internet access, cable TV, and local and long distance telephone service. The housing fee includes free laundry facilities as well as free parking.

Genesee Community College Foundation also recently announced plans for an expansion of College Village, consisting of two new two-story residential buildings and a commons building, as well as renovation of the existing office and common space. Each of the new 10,500 square feet buildings will accommodate 32 students in eight apartment-style suites with single bedrooms. Each apartment will open onto a small interior courtyard, which can be used for informal activities or socializing.
