Two Distinguished SUNY Officials Visit Genesee Community College at Two Events in May

Genesee Community College’s 40th Anniversary will be in full swing this May. The 40th Anniversary Convocation, scheduled for Thursday, May 3, 2007 at 1:00 PM, features Dr. Risa Palm, Provost of the State University of New York. Dr. Palm will be giving the keynote address. All the College’s former presidents and retired faculty and staff members will be honored guests at the Convocation, which is a formal academic ceremony marking a special event or milestone in the life of a college or university. Genesee’s last convocation was held in 1991 to mark the opening of the Genesee Center for the Arts. The Convocation will be held in the Stuart Steiner Theatre at the Batavia Campus.

At the College’s annual Commencement Ceremony, scheduled Sunday, May 20 at 1:00 PM, the current Chancellor of the State University of New York, John R. Ryan, retired U. S. Navy Vice Admiral will be the Class of 2007’s commencement speaker. The Commencement Ceremony will be held in the Anthony T. Zambito Gymnasium at the Batavia Campus.

Chancellor Ryan has served in his current post since 2005. He has also served as President of the state University of New York Maritime College and as Interim President of the University at Albany. Prior to his service with SUNY, he was the Superintendent (President) of the U. S. Naval Academy in Annapolis. Chancellor Ryan last week announced his intention to leave his SUNY post May 31.

Chancellor Ryan is well known for his distinguished naval career. A native of Mountainhome, PA, he graduated from the U. S. Naval Academy in 1967. He received the M.S. degree from George Washington University in 1975. He also completed the program for Senior Executives in National and International Security at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.
