SUNY Chancellor to Address Genesee Community College Class of 2007

John R. Ryan, retried U. S. Navy Vice Admiral and Chancellor of the State University of New York, will be the Class of 2007’s commencement speaker, President Stuart Steiner reported to the Board of Trustees this evening. Commencement is scheduled for Sunday, May 20 at the Batavia Campus.

Chancellor Ryan has served in his current post since 2005. He has also served as President of the state University of New York Maritime College and as Interim President of the University at Albany. Prior to his service with SUNY, he was the Superintendent (President) of the U. S. Naval Academy in Annapolis. Chancellor Ryan last week announced his intention to leave his SUNY post May 31.

Chancellor Ryan is well known for his distinguished naval career. A native of Mountainhome, PA, he graduated from the U. S. Naval Academy in 1967. He received the M.S. degree from George Washington University in 1975. He also completed the program for Senior Executives in National and International Security at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.

After designation as a naval aviator and assignments in operational squadrons, John Ryan served in numerous naval leadership positions across the globe. He was the first in his naval academy class to be selected as an admiral. He led aviation surveillance forces in the Pacific and then was assigned to lead multiple commands in Europe as Commander Maritime Surveillance and Reconnaissance Force, U. S. Sixth Fleet/Commander, Fleet Air Mediterranean/Commander, Maritime Air Forces, Mediterranean with headquarters in Naples Italy. In this assignment, he was responsible for operational control of six naval bases in three countries, three military hospitals, and all U. S. maritime surveillance and reconnaissance forces in the Mediterranean Sea. He also served as coordinator of similar North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) forces.

Admiral Ryan’s decorations include the Distinguished Service Medal, Defense Superior Medal, Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal, Navy Commendation Medal, and other numerous service awards.
