Visual and Culinary Arts at Genesee Community College Arcade Campus Center

Heading out to Winterfest in Arcade? Make sure you stop by Genesee Community College’s Arcade Campus Center to enjoy the art show and reception for Robin Zefers Clark on February 9 from 4-7 pm. The show will feature Robin’s art and a dessert reception with baked goods from Laura’s Country Oven.

Clark’s watercolors are an ongoing pictorial record of life in rural Western New York; they include rural and wildlife scenes as well as local history and legends. She often uses old photographs as subject matter and creates a painting that captures the vintage feel – a technique she calls Grandcester.

Robin’s artistic style has been a journey for her. Originally, she cared little for working with watercolor and had a preference for oil. However, during her coursework at RIT while earning her Masters Degree in painting, she came to love the watercolor medium. Today her watercolors blur the line between past and present, depicting local farms, family, and friends as her subjects, as well as the “interesting faces and places” she finds among dusty old photo albums.

In 1989, Robin and her late husband Tom built Brookside Studio, but her passion for art doesn’t stop at her studio door. Robin teaches art at Cattaraugus-Little Valley High School, where she shows students her knowledge of silversmithing, jewelry creation, computer graphics, film making, and sculpture in addition to her painting. Arvilla Pritchard from The Post Journal says, “…her paintings often reflect a kind of time warp…It’s like coming home.”

The dessert reception will feature baked goods from Laura’s Country Oven, a local bakery owned by Laura Kilburn. Kilburn, a recent graduate of Genesee Community College, purchased the business from Tracy Vedder, another Genesee graduate who has decided to pursue a teaching career. The reception will include pastries, cookies, and other homemade desserts.

This event is free and open to the public. For more information about the art show contact Dr. Deborah DiNoto, Associate Dean of Instruction at Genesee Community College at Arcade (585) 492-5265.
