Genesee Community College's Physical Therapist Assistant Program Receives 10-Year Accreditation

Genesee Community College’s Physical Therapist Assistant program has been reaccredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education through 2016, Director and Professor of the Physical Therapist Assistant Program Peggy C. Kerr reported to the Board of Trustees Monday evening.

The decision to reaccredit the program came after an extensive two-year internal self-study and a rigorous site visit by Commission representatives, Professor Kerr said.

Genesee Community College offers the Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree in the Physical Therapist Assistant field. Physical Therapist Assistants work in a wide variety of health care and rehabilitation organizations. They assist in the implementation of treatment plans that help individuals gain mobility and function more independently in daily life.

The field is rapidly growing, and the employment outlook is good, Professor Kerr said. Salaries are increasing, and one recent graduate reported a starting salary of $46,000, she told trustees.
