Genesee Community College Announces November Employee and Student of the Month

Genesee Community College is pleased to announce that Skip Sherman is the recipient of the Employee of the Month award for November 2006. Skip has just begun his fourth year at Genesee Community College, where he has worked hard and shown great initiative to revitalize the baseball program, which is now among the best in the country. He recruited tirelessly and coached the team to its first ever Western New York Athletic Conference championship last fall with a record of 19-4. This was the first time in school history that the men’s baseball program won the conference title.

Skip launched a new Kid’s Night Out program to help generate revenue to pay for the team’s annual Florida training trip. The program, now in its third year, averages 130 young boys and girls a month who come on campus for an evening of sports and games with student athletes. “I am extremely proud of the Kid’s Night Out program,” Skip said. “I wanted to do something that was community service oriented and I really love children. Kid’s Night Out seemed to be the perfect fit.” His initiative in helping to secure resources has helped improve the quality of Genesee Community College’s baseball facilities.

Skip attended Monroe Community College and received a Bachelor’s degree from Empire State College. He started his coaching career in 1991 at Arkport Central School as the Varsity Head Baseball Coach. He then spent five years as the Assistant Baseball Coach at Alfred State College before taking a similar position at Ashland University in Ohio. He was hired as Head Baseball Coach at Genesee Community College in 2003.

A native of Alfred, NY, Skip now lives with his wife in Brockport, NY. The two enjoy spending time outdoors, especially hiking and camping, and Skip is also an avid golfer and enjoys hunting.  Skip is a qualified leader who sets impeccable standards and expectations both for himself and for those with whom he works. He has the ability to generate and implement ideas of vision and he is fair, willing to make decisions, and provides a productive environment in which student athletes are responsive to his instruction and leadership.

The Student of the Month of November has been awarded to Shawna Kirby, a Teacher Education major at Genesee Community College. Shawna is very committed to volunteerism as she has taken part in helping an Adaptive Physical Education class, the Information Fair, the holiday gift basket raffle, and most recently she made the trek to the Batavia campus from her home in Albion during the big “October Surprise” storm on October 13th in order to help with a special “Day in the Workshop” with Jim Brazell visiting from Texas. Shawna is also a member of the Education Club at Genesee.
