GCC Winning On the Court and Off: Wins and awards start accumulating

The Genesee Community College Women's Volleyball team has had an incredible season with the tournament trophies and wins piling up. Now they are adding off the court honors as well.

Coach Roger Majeski's Lady Cougars secured the Western New York Athletic Conference regular season title last week with a win over MCC on last Tuesday. They then continued their domination over MCC with a win in the Finals of the WNYAC Tournament held at GCC last Saturday. The GCC women had earlier in the month locked up the Region 3 title and now look to the Northeastern District Tournament being held this weekend. A win there will allow GCC to advance to the National Championship Tournament. The Lady Cougars are currently ranked 12th in the nation in the NJCAA Division 2 poll.

The Lady Cougars are adding off the court honors as well. Jen Martins (Mississauga, Ontario, Canada), Danielle Berryman (Hamilton, Ontario, Canada), and Lauren Spiotta (Batavia) were all named to the WNYAC First Team All Conference. Martins (Co-MVP), Spiotta (Co-MVP), Berryman, and Jill McAndrews (Ellicottville, NY) were named to the WNYAC All-Tournament Team this past weekend. The honors continued to pile up as Martins (Region 3 MVP), Berryman, McAndrews, and Spiotta were all named to the First Team All Region 3. The Lady Cougars also have players ranked among the leaders in several statistical categories: Martins ranks 13th in the Nation in Assists per game, Spiotta ranks 2nd in hitting efficiency and 8th in blocked shots, Lisa Weninger (Warman, SK, Canada) ranks 3rd in Aces per game, and Brooke England (Rochester, NY) ranks 23rd in digs per game.

Coach Majeski has also received honors this season earning the Region 3 Coach of the Year. Cougars return to action this weekend in King of Prussia Pa. for the Northeastern District Tournament.
