The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) recently awarded accreditation to the Early Child Care Center at Genesee Community College. This accreditation paved the way for increased funding from the State University of New York’s Child Care and Development Block Grant which will assist parents with their child care expenses. The previous year’s funding from SUNY totaled $48,800, and College officials were pleased to receive an increase to $52,400 or about a 7% increase for the 2006-2007 academic calendar.
Last year’s accreditation verified that the Child Care Center had undergone a comprehensive process of internal self-study, and also an external professional review to verify compliance with the Criteria for High-Quality Early Childhood Programs. The Center was found to be in compliance with all of the criteria.
“With our nationally recognized accreditation, we are delighted to be able to offer parents increased resources for child care expenses through the SUNY Block Grant,” Maggie Hagen, Director of the Child Care program said. “And we also are pleased to continue the excellent care and a stimulating environment for children, and I encourage all parents of young children to stop by and visit us to see what the Center is all about.”
Genesee’s Child Care Center can accommodate up to 56 children, and currently has openings for children, ages six weeks to five years. It operates Monday through Friday, from 7:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. The majority of the Center’s young attendees are children of Genesee Community College students, but some Genesee employees also use the Center as the care facility for their children. Community residents are also welcome to use the Child Care Center, however, the Center follows the College’s academic calendar and does not offer services during college holidays and through the summer.
The Child Care Center is located just inside the main entrance of Genesee’s Batavia Campus in a newly remodeled facility that features age-specific room and activity designations, resources and more than ten Genesee Community College Association staff, numerous volunteers and work-study students who are majoring in early childhood development.
