The Genesee Community College baseball team managed to split its games with Herkimer County Community College on Saturday. The Generals are currently receiving Honorable Mention in the NJCAA Division III poll. The Cougars lost game one, 5-2, but bounced back with a 16-14 win in game two.
In game one, GCC took a 2-1 lead into the fourth inning but Herkimer scored two runs in each of the next to frames to secure the victory. Craig Gillett lost his first game of the year. Quinn Fuller went 3 for 3 and Steve Froese added two hits for the Cougars. Game two produced an offensive explosion for both teams as they combined for 32 hits. Brad Kozak led the team with three hits, two RBI's and two runs scored. Fuller and Steve Torrey each had two hits including a home run for GCC. Yimy Rodriguez earned the win on the mound and Justin Bye got the save.
On Thursday, Genesee swept both games of the double header with Corning Community College. In game one, Bye pitched a complete game striking out eight while walking none for the 2-1 victory. Kozak led the offense with three hits (2-doubles) and he scored both runs. In the nightcap, four pitchers combined for the 6-0 shutout. Fuller earned the win on the mound by allowing only one hit in four innings of work. Froese had two hits and two runs scored.
The Cougars dropped two games on Tuesday to Division II Mercyhurst NE. GCC took a 5-2 lead into the bottom of the fourth before its defense faltered by giving up four unearned runs in the 8-7 loss. The Cougars fell behind early in the second game and never recovered, losing 7-2. Kozak went 4 for 6 on the day for Genesee.
Genesee is now 15-6 overall and 6-2 in Region III. The team will play host to Finger Lakes on Tuesday and Niagara County on Thursday before traveling to Jamestown on Saturday.
